Trotz des milden Klimas im Mittelmeerraum konnten auch die Ägypter nicht auf gestrickte Fußschlüpfer verzichten. Die Strickkunst allerdings verbreitete sich erst mehrere tausend Jahre später weiter nach Europa. Etwa ab dem 11. Jahrhundert genossen dann auch endlich Könige, Fürsten und der weitere Adel Europas gestrickte Edelseidenstrümpfe, während der Rest der Bevölkerung sich mit Fußlappen, improvisierten Kniestrümpfen oder Stoffstrumpfhosen, die an den Gürtel geknotet waren, behalf.
Als sich Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts durch die Reformation die Kirche spaltete, kam es ebenfalls zur endgültigen Trennung von Hose und Strumpf. Die Hose reichte nun bis kurz unter die Kniekehle und um Rasierblamagen zu vermeiden bedeckten Strümpfe den Rest des Beines. Die darauffolgenden Jahre lehnte sich die Männermode sehr an dieses Modell an. In französischer Adelsgesellschaft nannte sich diese Kniebundhose ”Culotte”. Erst 1789, zu Beginn der französischen Revolution, wurden zum ersten mal demonstrativ knöchellange Hosen getragen. Das war ein einschlagendes Ereignis in der Geschichte unserer heutigen Socke, denn ab dem Zeitpunkt der ”Sansculottes” ist der Strumpf von der Wade in den Schuh geklettert.
Bereits Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts wurden die Strümpfe mithilfe mechanischer Wirkstühle hergestellt und 1853 eröffnete die erste englische Strumpffabrik. Der Amerikaner William Lamb erfand nur 10 Jahre später die erste Flachstrickmaschine und kurz darauf wurde auch die erste Rundstrickmaschine eingeführt. Noch heute ist das Grundprinzip der Rundstrickmaschine relevant für die industrielle Strumpfproduktion.

Unsere gute alte Socke hat also einen langen Weg hinter sich bevor sie zu einem farbenfrohen Eco-Statement durch Minga Berlin geworden ist!

From this alleged “one-hit wonder” in early 2012 the company Papp Up, through which Gheorgiu offers a range of products created from paper, emerged. Among them the PAPP bow tie, currently being finalised by the communications artists as the next novelty must-have item for a reasonable price. PAPP glasses, PAPP ties, PAPP combs… are all products that found their way alongside massive brands at the Bread & Butter Berlin fashion fair in the summer of 2012 with sales growing ever since!

2013, back to the roots: Cantemir Gheorgiu’s latest coup, the PAPP UV is on the starting blocks. It is a return to the realignment of glasses as we know them. PAPP UV are sunglasses manufactured from hard fibers, mixed from wood and paper, thereby reconceiving otherwise familiar models from scratch.

The composition made of hard fiber is robust, does not break and is also light. The ends of the brackets are fitted with aluminum sheet so that the wearer can adjust them to their head shape with some simple bending. The shapes are striking and with paintcoats in expressive colours like red, black and dark yellow the glasses come across as avant-garde works of art.

A high level of UV protection comes as standard. A polarisation filter blocks specific light frequencies preventing them from entering the eye. This also stops reflections and leaves the cornea optimally protected.

The product also has new advantages over more familiar models: PAPP UV are flat and require no elaboarate eyewear casing. They can be easily tucked into a book allowing easy storage and transportation.

Der neunte Mai ist ein Tag zu Ehren der unzähligen Single-Socken. An diesem Tag gedenkt man den abertausenden verschollenen Socken und ihrer zurückgebliebenen nutzlosen Partner.
Immer wieder wird ein Jeder mit diesem Mysterium konfrontiert. Man sammelt sämtliche Dreckwäsche in seinem Zimmer auf, darunter auch unzählige noch Sockenpärchen und nach dem Waschgang, dem Aufhängen und Zusammenlegen muss man deprimiert feststellen, dass schon wieder ein oder gleich mehrere Socken von uns gegangenen sind.

Das rätselhafte Verschwinden einzelner Socken geschieht nicht nur hier in Berlin, bereits auf der ganzen Welt wurden alleinstehende Socken in Mülleimern, unter Betten und der Altkleidersammlung entdeckt. Die Trennung zusammengewachsener Sockenpärchen nimmt und nimmt kein Ende.
Doch wer oder was steckt hinter diesem metaphysischen Phänomen?
 Die Waschmaschinen und Trockner sind eigentlich gar keine Haushaltsgeräte, sondern wurden vom Geheimbund SSSC (SuspiciouslySocksSearchCrew) in unsere Gesellschaft eingeschleust? – oder ein Mutterbund der schon frühzeitig das löchrige Ende einer Socke erkennt, entfernt sie schon bevor ihre Schützlinge mit ramponierten Socken in die Schule gehen müssen? – Aber dann wäre immer noch nicht das kuriose Verschwinden nur einer Socke geklärt. 
Der Schlüssel zu diesem Mysterium bleibt uns wohl weiterhin verwehrt.
Cosy Sox und Fanny Day, zwei Hausfrauen aus Manchester, die es leid waren Singlesocken wegzuschmeißen, feierten am 9.Mai.1998 zum erstern mal den LOST SOCKS MEMORIAL DAY.
An diesem besagten Tag haben Cosy Sox und Fanny Day ihre verschiedensten Singlesocken wieder nutzbar gemacht und sie einen Tag lang zu ihrer Ehren getragen. Die großartige Idee verbreitete sich so schnell wie der jährliche Sockenverschleiss und jedes Jahr werden am 9.Mai die verschollen Socken zelebriert und geehrt!

Mit dem Tragen zweier unterschiedlicher Socken gibt man den einsamen und verlassenen Socken die Chance, wenn auch nur für einen Tag im Jahr, wieder getragen zu werden.
Also zelebriert und ehrt zusammen mit MINGA BERLIN am 9. Mai an der Warschauer Brücke in Berlin eure verloren gegangenen Socken!

Hello Gilllion
You are the singer of the band. Maybe the only person from Notic Nastic someone would recognize on the streets. You guys prefer to remain anonymous revealing your identity purely through the music. Is this really possible? And what is the reason for your belief in anonymity?

GILLION: In the beginning the identities of Notic Nastic were completely hidden with light reflective masks on stage etc but as the message became stronger the voice needed a face and we started to lose the mask in order to get closer to the audience. This has been a gradual process and like you just noted – we wanted the music to speak! People need a face sometimes too in order to relate.

Notic Nastic is known as a vegan and ethically convinced band, this is your trademark. But imagine there would be a very talented dancer who would fit perfectly in your band but he loves eating meat or is not even vegetarian. What would you do? Is being vegan a requirement to being part of the band?

GILLION: We’re not the vegan police, y’know but we obviously like to work with people who share the same values and beliefs as us. for example we worked with this amazing vegan choreographer James Koroni from New York to make the sunset boys music video and all the outfits in the shoot are from vegan designers so it just felt right and was easy because we’re on the same wavelength. We work with non veggies too though.

Your message is to open our eyes to see the truth and go FULLSCREEN – the title of your newest album. Tell us about your positive experiences you made with going FULLSCREEN. And give us a hint on which points in daily life we should attach importance to go a bit in this direction. 

GILLION: Fullscreen is actually our last album and it was released 2011. We’ve had quite a few digital releases since then and we’re currently working on a new album! It should be out by autumn.
Fullscreen is about facing the truth and doing something about it. All the little things add up and we can’t rely on governments and ruling powers; we have to look within ourselves because we have power to make change collectively. The things we all know about but many choose to ignore, such as Notic Nastic support ethical, sustainable fashion designers who respect human rights and animal rights. We choose to be vegan when there are people starving in countries where crops are grown for meat farming in wealthy countries. It’s about taking a stance and having a voice and using that voice to inspire change.

Axl, you’re currently working on your second studio album which will be published by EPIC. Please tell us about the style of music, inspirations…

AXL: Yeah, the new EP will be titled ’80′s Babies’ and as you can imagine – it has a lot of 80′s influences, a little Prince and MJ I worked with talented Nu-Disco producer Lenno (18 year old wonder child from Finland) on this one and I couldn’t be more happier with the outcome. I started working on this EP last fall in LA and finalised the vocal recordings back home in Finland a few moths ago. You can actually download the EP for free at www.axlsmith.com/80sbabies

What has been your best live show experience so far?

AXL: I think it was opening up for Raphael Saadiq. To all of us who haven’t seen us live – we go all out! And our inspirations and background is from the golden era of funk and soul. So when we played our set and spiced up our own material with little snippets from The Time, Shalamar and The Jacksons – Raphael and his band was blown away If I recall correctly, he thanked us on stage like six times
it felt good to be appreciated like that.

In your opinion, tell us about the most aspiring talent that you got to know while hosting the casting show ‘The Voice of Finland’!

AXL: Well the best thing is that the whole vibe of the show is POSITIVE. We don’t judge people like on other talent shows. I got on board pretty quickly, as my friend (and also an old MTV face) Carson Daly hosts the US version and we talked about the strengths of the format. We both saw the opportunity, but had no idea that it would blow up this big. I like the fact that all the singers who get to the finals get recognised in good light and are able to make a name for themselves.

You’re a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. Which projects do you support?

AXL: I’ve been a global GWA (goodwill ambassador) for six years now. It’s been a blessing. I’ve gotten to talk and teach to kids around the world. I just got back from East-Timor, a country that used to belong to Indonesia. East-Timor is actually the second youngest country in the world, so you can understand the challenges of a new government and infrastructure. The kids are usually the ones that suffer the most. So now we have a solid project called “Schools for Asia” where we work on the educational system in the 11 poorest Asian countries. Everybody can jump on board – just google Unicef and research on our work.

‘Langtunes’ ist eine dieser Bands. Im Juli letzten Jahres hatten die Jungs von Langtunes aus Teheran das Glück und wir die Ehre, sie in Berlin kennenzulernen und ihre Musik und ihre Geschichte zu hören (Mehr dazu in unserem Blog unter http://www.mingaberlin.com/blog/2012/08/sie-mussen-gehort-werden-langtunes/).In ihren Songs erzählen sie von von ihrem Hintergrund im politischen Teheran. Langtunes genossen die kurze Zeit in Berlin und wäre am allerliebsten hier geblieben. Zurück in Teheran versuchen sie weiterhin, ihre Musik an die Öffentlichkeit zu bringen. Öffentlichkeit bedeutet hier allerdings nicht national sondern internationale Aufmerksamkeit zu erlangen.

Der Sänger Bijan Moosavi aus Teheran hat eine Crowdfunding Aktion für die Produktion seines Album in die Wege geleitet. Im Gegenzug einer kleinen Spende erhält man einen Song aus seinem Album.

Fernab von dem Klischee-schicken Münchner gibt es für alle Raverfreunde auch zahlreiche OpenAirs. Ob direkt am Garchinger See, beim Rave Autonomica im Olympiapark oder allsonntags in der Villa Kunterbunt; die angesagtesten Djs machen es möglich, unvergessliche Tanzabende in München zu erleben.

Für HipHop Fans gibt es das Crux. Hier kann zu oldschool und newschool HipHop vom Feinstens abgeshakert werden.

Ein weiterer Klassiker ist das Xcess. Kein Eintritt und faire Getränkepreise und immer wieder eine Überraschung. Durch einen Eintrag in eine Liste kann hier jeder auflegen. Ist dann ja wohl klar was da raus kommt : spannender Mix aus 80s, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Rock, Elektro und HipHop. Da das Xcess sehr klein und meist gut besucht ist, ist die Partystimmung garantiert. Ob Tische oder Bänke, hier wird überall getanzt!

Um nach einer langen Nacht wieder fit zu werden bietet sich das Hans im Glück Restaurant an. Ob vegetarisch oder einen deftigen Hans im Glück Burger – hier kommen die unterschiedlichsten Geschmäcker auf ihre Kosten.

Im ”Trattoria Donna Maria” kocht die Herrin des Hauses jeden Tag ein neues und verzauberndes italienisches Gericht und durch das Ambiente des Restaurants könnte man meinen, mitten in Italien zu speisen.

Some enthusiasts are even pushing to include pole dancing as an olympic sport, and 2016 is not too far away!
Three years should hopefully leave enough time for the international competition to include a sport that has become increasingly more popular to both men and women of all different ages and nationalities.
And lets face it, between table tennis, fencing and pole dancing, which one would you rather watch?

That is when we stopped and asked ourselves, ‘what would a pole dancing uniform look like in the olympics?’

The uniform in sports is absolutely crucial in recognising a sport individually, adding visual elements, adding comfort and most importantly, adding protection all at the same time.

We decided to do a few tryouts with an established pole dancing school in Hamburg, adding our own very special ‘Berlin Touch’ to the uniform. Before you get too excited, let us remind you that what you are about to see is not a group of seducers seeking to entertain you, but simply a group of confident young women leaving their inhibitions behind in the form of sport and all this frocked in socks!

What better way to be taken seriously as a sport than by wearing the infamous high socks.
They really determine the difficulty of the activity, as the more sweat and heat you exude from your body, the more accessories you would obviously need to absorb all the fluids. With pole dancing featuring dance, gymnastics, acrobatics and muscle strength, why would it be an exception to requiring socks?

The poles are generally out of steel, brass or titanium – direct skin contact can equate friction burns and bruises.
While the hands are generally the main grip to the pole and are already protected with chalk for extra clinging, the feet are generally free and swung back behind the head or lifted horizontally in the air. They could additionally be protected from accidental pole kicks and scratches in these little organically fabricated protectors.

Who didn’t watch ice skating as a kid simply to watch young couples sliding around elegantly in sparkly suits, almost making the sport look like a theatrical show. We want to recreate those nostalgic experiences for our own kids by feeding their eyes with limitless amounts of colour, patterns, designs and distractions.
Ten years from now, pole dancing will be remembered and represented as that family gathering in front of the TV, moving the complete opposite way from the image it still had less than a decade ago.
